Why are the Playgrounds called Robinson Playgrounds, anyway?
The namesake for the playground is the legendary Robinson Crusoe. In a shipwreck on the high seas, he was stranded on a deserted island and had to help himself. All men often have to adjust to new and rapidly changing situations. This means we must always help to anew. Every child should be able to have the time and places where they can "help themselves" to practice and learn through play. A Robinson's playground can be one such place. There are all kinds of tools, all kinds of materials and many toys. Here that which is discarded is designed and reinvented. A child ran, jumped, stumbled and got up again. On this island every child determines for himself what, how, and at what pace to learn and play. " |
